Oscar Hijuelos The Fourteen Sisters of Emilio Montez O'Brien
From the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love and performed by Cathy Moriarty.
Born aboard a ship bound from Cuba to New York near the turn of the century, Margarita Montez O'Brien is the oldest of fourteen sisters. This story, in part, recollects her life, her loves, and her relationships with her siblings. Except for her Irish father, Nelson, a photographer and entrepreneur who settles with his Cuban wife, Mariela Montez, in a small Pennsylvania town, the O'Brien household is abuntantly female - and remains so until the birth of Margarita's only brother Emilio. While reflecting on the life of her much-loved and doggedly handsome brother, who makes something of a name for himself as a minor screen idol and who has a tendency to break female hearts, Margarita also touches on the nature of femininity, family, sex, love and earthy happiness.
