Come to the Bower assumes that every effort to extend the ground of liberty is also a campaign against the tyranny of death, and so is the search for love. The story begins in New Orleans, October 13, 1835, the day the Texan revolt against Mexico was announced in that city. It ends in Texas, May 8, 1836, two and a half weeks after the destruction of the Mexican advance at San Jacinto. The war is less the subject, however, than a circumstanace urging certain Americans to face interrelated problems of freedom, love, and death during their nation's youth.
